Yeah, making the mask black and then inverting to constrain. But its pretty limited. I usually end up using two tracers- one for the shapes and one for the region of interest shapes and then multiply those together.

I’m almost positive there is a custom hot key you can make for this. I’ll have to check mine tomorrow.

I have a custom key for it: Smoke C. I hardly ever use it. I just re-poke vertice 1 to close.

In GMask Tracer, you should be able to get what you are looking for if you do the following if your setup only has one GMask: Set the Matte Correlation to Inside.

You could also leave as is, create a second Matte output and set that Output to Blending - Override and Composition - Inside.

Dealing with the Blending, Matte Composition, and Correlation is wayyyyy too complicated. We could look into this, but it’s the compatibility with older setups that may be very hard to deal with.

Oh I know! But sometimes I’ll just be making a couple masks and then realizing ROI doesn’t work like old school, so have to copy paste some nodes and do some comp node maths.

I’m pretty much 100% Gmask Tracer these days.

The added functionality you get from it’s fundamental relationship to Action is too useful to ignore.

But…

Totally agree that the gradient / softness is filthy compared to original Gmask.

Also, I really miss being able to “delete” vertices temporarily when things get all bunched up and then reactivate them later. Does that still exist in Tracer?

Yep I still like legacy. Using flame on Mac locally on my desk so no teradici

Bit of fiddly Roto on a still image. Sammie Roto fail. Gmask tracer drawing all those curves like a poor man’s illustrator just draws odd curves and struggles closing the mask.

legacy gmask just rotos and puts on a feather easily. I was thinking about it, is it because every point is a straight line between the points? I watched myself pause and work out how far I needed to move for the next point to cover the distance. Then I can easily bend the vertices or break them it’s the predictability of it that makes it great at Roto. Also the accuracy. I tap a dot and the vertice goes where I want it. I tap to close the gmask and it closes.

I can’t seem to emulate this in Tracer. Any thoughts? @richardamckeand @andy_dill

I mean, I haven’t used the legacy gmask since the new one arrived, but I agree with all the criticisms of the new one for sure. Adding softness never gets you an ideal result, with odd blobby shapes (see examples above) that usually require multiple masks to manage, and the transition between a small amount of softness to a large amount gets noticeably steppy if they’re too close together.

Also the old one makes a better edge.

So yeah, I’d love for the new guy to behave like the old guy, but the ability to use them inside of action, to paste them from gmasks to action and back, that’s too valuable to me and I’ll just deal with the bullshit that comes along with.
