The last couple jobs or so I’ve started pretending I was in 2010 or something on a box with a gig network connection and just pulling stuff in off the server over the VPN and caching it local. I was really surprised at how well it was working and then I was like, Oh, this is exactly how we all used to work and it was fine.
Unfortunately, we are not allowed to do that anymore due to security restrictions… certain clients do not want (understandably) the content to leave the premises and it is one of the key requirements of a TPN certification so those methods are on the way out I think. A shame, because pull/push is a great solution, unless you have to move terabytes every time, of course.
Streaming is the way forward I am afraid, using a hypervisor like RGS or Parsec or NiceDCV, or perhaps a zero client like Teradicci or anything like that…
