Thanks guys, I really love your attitude, I’m the same. It’s just that Flame is only a fraction of what I do but I’ve been using it for decades and generally only need to seriously do big comps like this from time to time.

Well, I’m no closer to an answer and this shot is proving difficult to get a decent track, so I’ll ask. What would be your approach?
I directed this shoot and time was a big issue and no way to get rid of the lighting rig here, (it’s a tv show shot during the series, we only got one day with cast and about 50 other shots to get), figured I’d clean it up myself later. I’m editing and grading this too.
I figured 3d track, project cleaned up plate through gmasks/3d shapes, then roto beams etc back over projections. Camera analysis is not loving life, so I’ve also been trying perspective grids but that’s not working so well either. Thoughts? 🙂

@Unclextacy - If you absolutely have to fix this @ full-resolution, edge to edge, then you need a good 3d-track, and once you have that there are over 2,000 people here who can help you.
This 3D track in Syntheyes will probably set you back about 4 seconds.
It will provide you with a ground plane and pertinent locators in about 10 more seconds.
You’ll be just fine.
If you were living in the 90s you would have scaled and cropped the picture and your client would have given you their first born…

Well, there may be a creative solutions. All the light rigs live in this fairly structured tent ceiling. Several segments, especially on the right are clear. There may be a way of duplicating the clean roof panel sections, flipping them and remapping them with UV/extended bicubic to remove the lights. the put some color washes on it similar to what existed on set to hide the copies from looking identical. Could work, still quite a bit of work, but gets you around having to 3D track.

Also never underestimate a point track and the drag brush since this is a straight dolly shot.

The other option - as alluded to is clean 3D track, then a version of what on the forum is described as Randy’s not black belt projection technique to project the ceiling onto two cards, paint, and reverse projection. That will make it easier to paint with all the parallax.

As to the 3D track, the auto button only gets you that far. @philm is suggesting that Syntheyes will get you there in 30s. Maybe, maybe not. Depends if it’s your lucky day. But there are decent number of points for a manual 3D track that should have a favorable hpix. Might take 2hrs. Syntheyes, PfTrack, or 3DE are all decent choices.

But each of them has a learning curve, so if this is your first time past camera analysis that may be a big hill to climb. You could outsource the 3D tracking. It’s reasonably affordable. Or see if someone here in the group is looking for a good practice shot to refine their tracking muscles.

So you have to remove all the lighting fixtures on the ceiling? That’s a lot!

Have you tried using Front-Matte Offset for some of it? It might help remove some of them. Especially if you stabilize the ceiling first.

A planar track might work as well. You said you tried perspective grid already - I would think that might work here. Did you mask out the beam that occludes the ceiling for the track? If not that in Flame, Mocha might work, if you have access to that.

A 3D track could certainly help but you’d also would need geometry at the correct angles for the sloped ceilings. Besides the track and the geo, you would need an accurate lens distortion solve, which could also be generated by an accurate camera track. Honestly, I would try the 2d methods before going down the camera track route, esp if you are not familiar with it.

the next renderdome should be tracking this shot the fastest. They have video game speedruns, microsoft excel speedruns, why not Syntheyes speedruns.

@Unclextacy If you can post a dropbox link to the shot as a prores, jpeg sequence or whatever, I’d be happy to run it through syntheyes to see if it makes a nice track easily.

I’m far from the best at the program, but I can track stuff and establish the floor plane.

I suggest we all band together and form a VFX outsource company called DOMESOURCE. Each shot is given to all of us and the first one finished gets all the money for the job. The last one finished is demoted to After Effects.

You don’t need Syntheyes to track this shot. This can be quickly tracked in Flame. Do not use Camera Analysis. The Mono Analyzer will provide a much better solution for this shot.

you could probably piece together a million different planar tracks or 2pt tracks with manual key framing and patch a lot of the stuff but i recommend really trying to get a camera solve with SynthEyes, Camera analysis or even the old Action Camera tracker. There is a lot of detail to track in this shot and it should n’t be a super challenging track. Once you’ve got a decent camera solve and ground plane you sort of have the keys to the kingdom as far as clean up goes as you won’t have to track millions of patches. you can also use the camera solve to stabilize the little bit of camera jitter as well. If you dont have the bandwidth to do it yourself (happens to me a lot as well) there are lots of outsource vendors that can turn around a camera solve for you in a day. You will def need plenty of roto to restore the cross beams back over top as well… Let us know how it goes!

as a distraction from python I tried it in a recent version of flame

- reduce to HD
- do a mono analysis - there’re tons of anchor points
- destroy the random tracks on people and shoes
- update the solve
- export to fbx
- open a 3840x2160 action
- import the fbx with default scaling
- do some clever intermediate 2d stab shizzle
- paint some frames
- project some stuff
- move on.
