When you say “sound effect” do you mean the timelineFX like gain/reverb/EQ/… ? They all have their individual on/off buttons (the blue lights next to the effect’s name)

Or do you mean the whole audio track, which you can mute by pressing the speaker icon…

Or do you mean the annoying alert sound that you can get on a Mac that comes through your client speakers and gets very annoying?  
I just go into Mac sound preferences for that and turn alert sound right down.
