Unless you have something special planned with them, the support phone calls are allocated only 30 minutes…. no more. They will hang up on you. It has happened to me.
If you want, when you receive your new gear, let’s setup a few hours to Zoom, and I’ll help you setup RL, FreeIPA, NFS, and get you a working Linux environment.
build a baremetal NAS with FreeBSD or use TrueNAS.
rocky NAS is more complicated because of licensing.
if you build your startup disk(s) as ZFS mirror do not use compression.
build a Proxmox host and install TrueNAS as a VM.
do not use compression on the VM disk.
pass all the storage drives to TrueNAS.
if you want to use compression on the TrueNAS pool this will work.
create a pool for $USERHOME.
install FreeIPA as a VM on your NAS.
slowly migrate your network to FreeIPA.
or don’t
the thing is, with my business logic here i just can - not run user management, or rather it would be completely useless. every machine only has 1 local user due to other software limitations mostly to do with licensing , i tried it allready and had AD running and all on workstations → it was horrible.
we are too small to get floating licenses for most things and we run deadline and render with Nuke and Houdini using interactive and user-locked licenses , moving to actually named users on workstations would require a HUGE investment , like its not funny .
The crazy part I DO have AD running for all “client” machines, I treat the workstations like open machines, they only have a single flame user, all of them and then every local user loggs into them remotely, its beautiful, its easy and causes me no overhead in IT admin time which i have literally 0 left .
And we are stuck with our macs, we cant afford linux machines, power prices in europe are insane, i can barely cool down the houdini farm as is right now, like its just not viable to buy a RTX something Threadripper whatever . that and RAM prices are so off the charts, its a dead end.
new NAS really is just a minisforum MS-01 with 32Gb ram and 2x 2TB (raid1) NVME for “project home” and the database , itll be just for that and that alone as running it on a VM apparently leads to performance issues… fun times and as it looks the “its on a vm” part is less important now that a snapshot of that database is pretty much useless anyhow, ill just be relying on archives
I do really appreciate it tho alan, thank you so much for all your help let me see where I get with this… and hit you up -.-
I want to do fun things and not play sysadmin all day to be completely honest, this
I have that all pretty much allready lol. and it doesnt work so there is that …
I think it would still be beneficial to setup at least a working test environment, that conforms to best practices. Linunx NAS, User Management (AD or FreeIPA), S+W DB, Linux Flame. Even it is just a test, but at least confirm such a thing can work (it does, we do it).
Then work from there to see how to implement that with your desired workflow and configuration.
Something seems drastically wrong with your current implementation.
yea.
well progress right now is that Ive got a supper narrow set of things to test, some false things along the way etc, errors i observed where sometimes wrong etc;
Right now i am at
→ linux and mac clients connecting to projectserver/rocky exposed nfs share == all is well (no matching UIDs) , its just SLOW because i run it in a VM on top of ZFS.
→ Linux clients to random NFS share (i tried like 4 different filesystems and host-OS) is fine (didnt pay attention to UIDs, but it doesnt seem to care either way)
→ Mac Clients to random NFS share = all the “link” issues above, i put the 501 user on the NFS severs and everyhting but 0 change, nfsv3 or v4 makes no difference at all, cant get a mac to save timeline resizes to a NFS share that isnt the project server.
So whatever the project server is doing or the combination of it running XFS + NFS and is rocky instead of qnap/ubuntu or whatever seems to be my issue. → hence me getting a new rocky server tomorrow to see if that works
silly question but what is the speed of the network on the new NAS?
2x 10gbit sfps, but i also have a 25Gbit upgrade waiting
The documentation can always be more verbose and this page talks high level about users management Help. But best practices when working with multi users and multi OS is to ensure the identities, UID and GID match. We do not want to go deep in sys admin documentation but you point out that I guess we should add more beef.
it’s beyond the scope but an instruction on how to get best practices working for AD or LDAP could serve the community well.
This is easy.
“User IDs should match on all systems.”
agreed - the instructions are pretty clear - but we can choose to follow the instructions or not.
After a year of testing many versions of recent Flame releases, we’ve determined to stay on 2025 as there is a large amount of instability and bugs in all post-2025 versions. I can’t waste my time constantly diagnosing and reporting stuff. And then there is basic stufff that ADSK refuses to do anything about, like the random, but frequent Paint node corruptions.
There are no compelling features in the new versions in which we feel this will be more of a detriment to our business than the shit we’ve been dealing with the past year.
In two years we all will be saying to Alan; why are you running such old software?
@ALan will have retired by then and won’t be giving two hoots… so there’s that…
Respectfully…. in his undies?
How curious. Since the early versions, I haven’t had a paint corruption issue in years.
i am about to just scream and uninstall flame from my life.
Got a new fast server installed project server on it, batch saves take just as much time as saving to my VM project server, i am seriously loosing my marbles here.
WHAT IS GOING ON , WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS FLAME
pissing me off majorly. has anyone EVER tested this?? obviously not.
been thinking to just go yearly flame licenses, but I dont see this happening with the state of the project server and ridicolousness.
I hate this , i hate this , this is the most stupid, ridicolous garbage , ANY OTHER TOOL does not have any of these stupid things, flame is crazy expensive i expect at least something BASIC as sharing projects across a small facility to just work. but it doesnt.
cursed. completely cursed. how can you sell this as a product??? its literally INSANE, the amount of time I have just WASTED trying to make this stupid database server to work literall days wasted.
might as well start spending my time on more useful endeveours, this is not worth it.
and resepectfully but you can throw UID management between linux and macs into the absolute abyss of hell, nowhere in the docs does it say “YOU HAVE TO USE IDENTIDY MANAGEMENT” that would be something that immidiately would have disquallified flame for us. its all like :if you have it connect it now” I dont and I wont . also has nothing to do with my issues so there is that
Happens to me all the time I use paint. Just happened to me.
