there are some posts here , you can actually change a config file (sw cfg something) to get dwab for your timeliens and general caching.
Bascially its “visually losless” compression, go one step further and denoise your plates before publish and you will get even WAY smaller files
only reason I wouldnt do dwab would be
- high end greenscreen shots shot on arriraw
and thats about it.
Yes there is some minor generational loss, sure.
No colorist has ever noticed (one complained because it said dwab, so i took the dwab and reencoded it to piz and he was happy…)
We have been doing only dwab@45 for all shows since like 5 years. Been such a HUGE money and time saver
hell I can easily playback UHD timelines that are cached(rendered tlfx) ona framestore thats just 10Gbit/s because the files are so crazy tiny. and its still higher quality than caching to prores444…
Dont forget to not put log into 16bf exrs, always go linear , or rec709 its fine too - we use 32bit float for log.
