LucidLink Rugpull

they pulled the rug on wasabi ( the “cheap” ) option so if you are on wasabi lucid… new prices are like 3x and they use AWS now, the new lucid 3.0 app they released is not even feautre complete yet , cant change mountpoints or cache size

enough said, we are looking at alternatives, there are a few.

stuff like thid just annoys me , unpredictable costs adjustment

selfhosting rulez.

I replied to the boss on Slack asking for a timeframe , I’m gona guess she dill dodge the subject

I asked the same, just takes like one macOS update that breaks the fuse kext again and we are SOL

Wasabi is $6 a TB , lucid was $20 a TB so a healty markup I can live with.

suite studio uses cloudflare, thats $15/TB and suite is $70/TB quiet a heafty markup

I am trying to figure out if its actually all just a fancy gui on top of rclone and macfuse … dont know what secret crap they put on top . I build a prototype in like 3 hours that at least at first sight works the same as these .

there is also amove.io popping up promising a lot for cheap.

Isn’t the only unique think about Lucid, that it does “smart” caching, and you don’t need to have available free space for the totality of the dataset?

Even iCloud drive does that, and you can manually pin directories.

Is iCloud suitable for Trusted Partner Network?

its a bit more than this “on demand sync” it feels more like a NAS and not like a sync app like dropbox

for example if you have a 20min prores clip it only streams and caches the part of the prores you need which is useful to some workflows (not mine)

the biggest win for us is that it mounts like a external disk so we get same mountpoints for everyone no matter where they are, so we can tap into freelancers home-boxes and licenses. gives us so much flexibility.

can you do all this kinda the same with synologydrive/dropbox/ whatever and run symlinks ? sure but we found onboarding with lucid to be suuuper easy and fast and it kinda just works.

also its a single point if thruth unlike having data replicated across all the machines.

we also use it in the studio as a nas replacement giving us local ssd speed for cached assets, going way past our 10Gbit infra, so it checks a lot of boxes for us.

but its not like there arent workeable alternatives. especially at the price now…

What about Resilio? Seems to have most of the feature set.

i found performance to be super bad last time I tried it also does it feature mounting as a drive etc? their weird thing they offer I just dont wuiet understand what they want

dropbox gives me $4/Tb i just need to run a script to symlink and I am golden

We used Resilio on a big job a few months ago.

Very mixed on it.

Pros:

  • Cost effective, since it’s peer-to-peer, no cloud storage/egress charges.
  • User mode install, not file system drivers, etc.

Cons:

  • At least one side has to setup port forwarding
  • Performance is good on large video files. Performance is very poor on image sequences like EXR. It seems to open multiple streams per file, but it doesn’t transfer multiple files in parallel.

Yuck. Port forwarding? What is this? 1999?

Hello to our LucidLink Community!

Today marked the launch of the entirely new LucidLink, a foundational release we are excited to continue building on. With this announcement, we know there are a lot of questions about what this means for your existing LucidLink accounts. We want to address these questions directly and ensure you feel supported every step of the way.

Here’s what you need to know:

For our customers running LucidLink Classic (2.8 or earlier), it’s truly business as usual. There are no changes to your current experience—no adjustments to your workflow, no impact on pricing, and no mandatory upgrades. Simply keep using LucidLink as you always have, without interruption.

However, if you’re curious about the new LucidLink (version 3.0), we’d love for you to give it a try! Version 3.0 can run side by side with your current setup, allowing you to explore its features without affecting your existing filespaces. You can access filespaces from both versions on the same desktop at the same time. It’s a chance to try out the new capabilities while maintaining the familiar environment of 2.x.

If you decide to explore 3.0, please note you’ll need to create a separate 3.0 account. This new account will work independently from your existing one, ensuring you can experiment freely without impacting your current setup.

We also want to be transparent: some features you may rely on in LucidLink Classic are still being added to the new platform. While we’re introducing exciting new enhancements, we’re also committed to reaching feature parity by early 2025 through multiple subsequent releases.

Lastly, we’re working on an upgrade tool, to be available in Q1 2025, which will allow you to seamlessly promote your 2.x filespaces to the new 3.0 platform without the need to copy your data. Whether your files are stored on IBM, Wasabi, or other S3 cloud storage providers, you can choose to keep your data right where it is.

In essence, think of LucidLink 3.0 as a new product, built from the ground up. When the time is right, the upgrade tool will make it easy for you to transition your filespaces into the new platform smoothly.

As always, we’re here to help answer any questions or concerns you may have. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to discuss further. Thank you for being a part of our community—your feedback and insights drive our work forward, and we can’t wait to hear what you think of the new LucidLink!

Warm regards,

The LucidLink Team

jup, but they dont say “supported until X” just “for now you are fine”

Perhaps jump off the bridge when pushed then?

Not sure if anyone has any experience with Suite Studios, but we were contacted by them as a Lucid alternative. We’re knee deep in a project right now and couldn’t explore other options, but perhaps this might be a good fit for others looking to leave lucid?

I’ve demo’d. There’s a lot to like, although to @finnjaeger point the pricing structure is pretty similar to Lucid.

But I like the guys. They’re scrappy. My issue is we’re so in it with Lucid that there needs to be super compelling reasons to jump ship at this point.

Dropbox has it’s cons and everyone makes fun of us, but we’re beating on it hard and it generally works great. We had looked at Lucid but got sticker shock. Our other office is going to test the Black Magic cloud thingamajig, but 48TB is kinda puny.

→ studio cache (like a Level2 cache)

→ Much faster reads and writes to the mounted volume. Lucid craps out at like ~1GB/s more or less depending on OS, seems to have gotten worse with LL3 , i guess due to them switching to fuse-t instead of macfuse.

→ easy transfer links for massive data transfer

→ better snapshotting thats Free!!

At the same pricepoint suite studio is feature and performance wise better , one thing I cant vouch for is stability - last time I tried it it bascially murdered my firewall because it was too brutal but they have a bandwitdth limiter now

Ahh, sorry I missed that you tried out in your post above. Good to hear that feedback.

We’re not in a position to really audition lucid alternatives right now, but sounds like this might be worth a look when we are.

Thanks for the info!

I am averse to rumor mongering but I wouldn’t be surprised if next year AWS do what Amazon did to online shopping - they will find the best parts, go directly to the manufacturers and suppliers and they will provide a whole foods approach to storage.
when they do it will be a mixed blessing.

yeah but isn’t it better to pretend its gonna be fine and then freak out when it actually isn’t?

asking for a friend.
