Anatomy of a Flame suite

There was an experiment back in Austin, TX in 1992 at a post house where they had the client and artist facing each other, with a complex set of monitors and architecture. Can anyone name that place which went out of business?

that has to be awkward.

Was the setup a bit like this? Heard this guy is going broke too, but more because he is a total arsehole and nobody wants to work with him anymore.

Hilarious

I need this table for my next client session.

“Is this because covid??”

“Da”.

Like playing Battleship???

Artist: “F4?”

Client: “Miss!”

We had rooms like this at Sol in Chicago (both finish and telecine) when I first started as an assistant and it was awesome. This was back in the SD days, though, so having to double up on the monitors wasn’t too murderous an expense.

Post Effects in Chicago back in the day used to have “face to face” editing rooms. All the monitors were sunk into a custom desk, with eyelines available across the desk. Interesting.

I love how studios over the years used to do all this crazy marketing mumbo jumbo. Years ago there was a pretty famous local Chicago studio that used to post on their website that their rooms were “soft rooms,” as in, all “technology” was removed from the room and housed in a centralized “core” or “brain.” To mess with them we used to call their reception and asked to book a “soft suite” and of course nobody knew what we were talking about.

Enjoy this super high tech Razr photo from back in 2006 of the client POV in our finish room.

What are we thinking with multi operator flame suites?

I kinda dig it having 2 or 3 people working on your job - live? clients gotta love that stufff, I dont know if I like it, I do have a junior artist but I also dont want to have someone right next to me all day,

its not easy.

We do it every once in a while and I like it. It’s important that you get on well and can tolerate each other’s musical tastes, haha.

I thought I’d hate it. The Mill LA would pack rooms with five or more sometimes. Turns out I’m a fan.

Most of my best memories of that place are in those packed rooms.

just huddle room full of artists or rooms with clients/approval suites there

Yea this is quiet normal for larger vfx houses to basically have large spaces with a lot of desks full of people kinda looks like a callcenter

But are those rooms with 4-5 or more people used for client sessions or are they just like regular office space.

We were still in suites with couches and all that. Clients would attend.

I fucking haaaate open plan offices. Just horrible. No culture can develop, nobody talks, just seas of headphones.

Even if nobody’s attending I still think putting more than 5 people in a room is bad. Everyone should feel some amount of privacy and ownership of their space.

Personally, I’ve never been unhappier working than when I was stuck in a bullpen with lots of other artists. Headphones culture sucks, and I need a sense of privacy and space to think. But that’s just me.

yea same, my idea is to have a second workstation next to mine in the main suite,

lets say I have my junior doing graphics work with assets that are beign sent over by the AD thats sitting on the couch (this tends to happen a lot) .

She would sit next to me, and we would both be directly in the loop of new graphics, I know she will prep them and I will throw them into flame.

vs: I am sending a slack to her next room up.

Just seems so nice and more collaborative but I might overestimate the size of that room… and nobody likes the music I am listening to anyhow

That’s fair. I’m sure part of my happiness with the situation was being the lead op and thus in charge of the radio and most of the conversation.

There’s a decent chance my old colleagues feel differently about being in a suite with someone who just wants to put Kylie Minogue on loop and talk about Star Wars.

I’m just a grumpy old bugger…hate having anyone in my room! Work much more efficiently without having to entertain others.
