Until the world settles down on a new standard, I’d rather stick to Rec709 which is tried and tested and as wisiwyg as it can be, no weird surprises down the road.
People were defining color spaces long before 2004 @finnjaeger.
To @andy_dill’s point a lot of us came up in a singular viewing/working space… essentially rec709 and everything outside of that domain was crammed into in it in some capacity or another.
Conceptually all that mattered was transfer function as the material coming off of the camera was immediately being moved into a 601, then 709 or later maybe 240. The only factor that would fluctuate was really just gamma hence the way a lot of us old folks (incorrectly) speak of colorspaces.
Is it technically unwoke? Sure. But does his question make sense to most? Yes, it does.
