Flame Blending Modes

Hi folks,
i have almost 6 years of Flame experience and have never used or even tried these blending modes because I don’t understand them.
Is there anyone who can tell me what they do or what they are for? Or is there an old tutorial where they are explained.

Hi,
Those are binary blending modes, they basically convert decimal to 1 or 0 do the binary operation and then convert it back to decimals.
Unfortunately, I do not think we have good documentation on those.
However, I found online a few of those explained pretty well:

cool thanks for the quick reply i’ll take a look right now!

Nuke has good documentation on the blending modes and the math behind it. Flame modes a generally the same, but names might differ a bit.

Somewhere in the depths of old Flame forums, Stephen White (of Flame fame) and I had a discussion about the specific math behind Flame’s comp modes and why some comp modes looked different in Flame from other apps. If I remember correctly, there were some subtle differences in the math between them (at the time) and other apps. Perhaps someone has an archive of that post somewhere, as in the end he listed the exact math behind each of Flame’s blend modes. Of course, that may have changed over the years with Flame.

You could always ask Senor Blanco.
Such a legend.

On fxguide there was a great post with a working demo using black and white circles (or something). It was ace. I have tried many times using way back machine etc to find it. Posting here in case it jogs anyone’s memory.

Yes! I remember that. It was with gradients and color bars afaik. I have also searched in vain to find it.

One of my favorite books on the planet. A compositing Bible of sorts. Has a chapter that breaks down blend mode math for the most common operations. I try to get every junior I meet to read it but I don’t think anyone wants to read books anymore in the age of YouTube. But it’s a timeless treasure trove.
