This is not good. He’s been a cornerstone at Autodesk.
I wish him all the best.
WHAT? Where did you find this out?
Bad news. Good luck to him, hes a legend but what does this mean for Flame?
Thank you for your service @La_Flame. We all owe you a beer.
He’s done so much for adsk. Big shoes to fill. Hope they keep the training series going.
Thank you, Grant, for the many years of extraordinary help in this community. You will be sorely missed.
Monumentally bad bad news. I thought it was strange that no learning channel videos had appeared for a while. I am not sure what the worse dimension of the news would be in terms of him moving on or them letting him go. If it was the latter, then that was a stupid move on their part. The slimming down of the technical specialists a few years ago was a poor move, as well as moving out of the live presentation spaces of IBC/NAB. Grant was the great communicator of Flame and whenever I had any communication with him (he used some of my and our University footage) he was super personable. Wishing Grant all the very best as the very best. Again, superbad news.
Cheers
Tony
Thanks for all the help over the years Grant. All the best for your future endeavours.
@La_Flame all the best in your next adventure
Thank you Grant @La_Flame your tutorials and tips have help me and many others learn the intricacies of Flames.
Good luck in your next adventure.
From the days of being the Smoke Demo Guy to the role you made for own, I always enjoyed our little chats - thanks Grant
He will be missed!
Autodesk really should get out in front of this and explain just what this means going forward. Losing a key person like Grant raises nothing but questions regarding the future of Flame.
I do not think I would have a career without Grant Kay and his videos from all these years. I have never met him, but if I ever do… I cant thank him enough!
Agreed that ADSK should really get ahead of this and say something about what is going on. Private channels are full of great angst about the meaning of this - particularly when it comes to the existential matter of bringing in & educating a new generation of Flame artists.
If they don’t hire someone for this role, and someone good, I see a very dark and short-lived future for this product, I am very unhappy to say.
A lot of tech companies are re-adjusting their budgets. They do this every year and in itself not necessarily alarming, but this year the adjusting seems to go deeper with the less rosy outlook on the economy.
Grant was a huge asset to ADSK and teaching new and old Flame users how the app worked and was used best. Without a capable replacement future adoption of Flame will definitely take a hit.
Grants overhead had to be minuscule in the big picture.
Without a proper explanation, this appears ominous.
Sadly I don’t think a Fortune 500 company with $4.4B in revenue gives a flying feck about what a few knuckleheads like us think. And nor should they. It’s business. It’s messy. And there’s a lot of activity out there at the moment, both good and bad.
Please keep in mind that, contrary to popular opinion, The Grant Kay is human. And he hangs out here. Hi Grant! Please keep the comments supportive and positive. If you want to gossip and spread rumors, then do that on Facebook.
And easy guys. He’s not dead. His legacy lives on and will continue to serve us and future little Lame Ops beautifully for years to come. And who knows. Maybe he soon gets to have new adventures with old friends and saddles up next to you on a project.
Feels a bit like the ravens leaving the tower.
