I typically use textures.com but curious if you all have other suggestions for matte painting elements to buy?
I typically just Google the query, drag it over, use it, don’t report or pay. I haven’t gotten sued yet, but the day is young.
Flickr stuff is quite good too. Flickr asks if you mind people using your photos so you can easily check whether there would be an issue.
For a recent project, I had to create a skyline viewed from a terrace. Instead of looking for photos of the city, I went to Google in 3D/earth mode, found a nice location, and did a screengrab. Worked perfectly with some depth blur.
I have also used street view for creating a distinctly European-looking but not specific background.
