So do i! Hate the tracer!
Yep…don’t get along with it at all. Always seems to take me longer to get a usable mask with tracer.
I’m not sure if this has been covered in regard to the vertical vs. horizontal question, but the original reason for the option, as it was told to me by some original Discreet Logic people, was that Quantel used to sue any manufacture who’s interface design resembled their trademarked interface of vertical reels. By making it a user based option and not a manufacturer locked design there were no grounds trademark infringement. Other great topics decided by lawsuit avoidance include the banding of gradients in early versions of the software, google dynamic rounding and you’ll find the big Q all over that.

I think the DR issue may have also accounted for the superior brush smoothness and softness in Q.
Absolutely. I still think about the “feel” of a paintbox brush, but I don’t miss the cord. Quantel got a little too big for their britches, they should have bought Adobe instead of trying to sue them.
I don’t use uncollapsed shots for snipping into two very much at all, but the scrolling along many shots in a reel category and comparing mulling over conceptual connections of shots in adjacent reels is something I really like about about Flame and which doesn’t feel retro (steenbeck, quantel) but every day and future-facing. It’s a great touchy-feely usp.
Cheers
