I had more meant something like the recent Matthew McConaughey & Timothee Chalamet clip. Something appearing very real but made with AI. I had initially wondered if the clip had been generated by AI due to its look. The fact that I am questioning authenticity on such things I guess is a statement on how real I think AI has become.

I wasnât suggesting it wasnât. More when I first looked I wondered. I checked to see if it was real. Then the thought occurred to me that one day someone will post something similar but in that case it will be AI generated in an attempt to ridicule anyone who posted in favour of it. Was thinking it would be more of a âYou can tell when footage is AI generatedâ spiel as a gotcha.
But if trickery is the game, youâve already lost. If the idea is, âSee, you didnât have a problem with it when you thought it wasnât AI but when you found out it was you no longer liked it, thus you are a hypocrite!â theyâre just revealing a shallow interpretation of how and why we consume media, as if weâre just moths attracted to flame (whether itâs a tiki torch or a bug zapper) instead of humans who use all sorts of assumptions about context and provenance to navigate the world around us. If I ate something and it tasted like a strawberry and then someone said âactually, that was horseshit that was modified to taste like a strawberryâ I would gag after the reveal, not just say, âoh ok, you got me, turns out I want to eat horseshit now that it can taste like strawberries.â

Love this take. Been thinking about this for a while now. Every VFX problem Iâve solved with Copycat has made me think that this is going to be the way forward. It also makes me think that the big studios will use this to develop an advantage over the small shops/solo artists who donât have the compute resources.
