I’ve always used the shot sequence. Always. I’ve had few moments where I thought,
“Hey I need a source sequence for this!”
…and that largely hinges on the fact I pretty much want to skip over dealing with sources as an atomic entity and move straight to shots because that’s where it all comes together with sequences when the rubber hits the road.
Anyone out there who can convince me otherwise? What would be the advantage of publishing a sources sequence and then conforming from the published sources sequence just to publish out again? Is there a way to even do so without pushing out the plates twice at this point? One used to be able to link but the last time I tried it wasn’t working….
I’m not nearly as deep into publishing to have recommendation on that aspect.
In my view, the value of the sources sequence rests entirely on two things being true: various shots use overlapping parts of the same source with significant overlap; and you’re applying a time consuming frame based operation (e.g. paint).
If both is true you can avoid costly repeat-work that may warrant this extra tax of handling a source’s sequence.
if these attributes don’t apply to your typical job, there’s little gained.
there is a minor edge case advantage for small teams, related to tracking / painting on long sources that are used multiple times, but to take real advantage you have to republish with links, which is only beneficial on file systems that support hard links, so…
for me that’s over-rated and underexploited, and adds to the cognitive overload, while providing negligible long term benefits.
It’s about as useful as splitting my two cents up into illegal tender:
Hard links not supported if I remember.
Maybe there’s a workaround.
Life is short these days.

Lucid Connect?
Does it Connect?
I am but a simple farmer. I use the sources sequence as a way to dedupe a pile of edits into a single sequence for grading. I can then sync those Image tlfx back out into all my edits with 2 clicks. Back when I used Lustre, I’d also often unlink it and relink to my rendered graded footage to automagically push color into the whole job without having to mess with the conform module. I can’t think of a reason I’d want to publish it, but I’m still pretty new at working unmanaged.
