8K may be coming faster than we think

Yep, no 2.5k and you’d need permission to shoot with ProRes too.

So many episodic shows I worked on using ProRes4444XQ in camera native camera colour space and it was never an issue in keying or in seeing any image degradation due to multiple passes of compression. Sometimes I think the technical purist approach is overkill and adds time and expense when it isn’t needed. With a good DOP, the colourists never seem to touch any RAW controls either. I know there is this future proofing concept but sometimes this will make the workflow much more efficient without causing anything but the most minimal of compromise and will be visually lossless to the end viewer vs best practice can be a hard argument to win. Have to say though, Netflix are awesome in Australia and are always open to discussion about all aspects of post production on their projects.

And most people just watch this stuff on their phones . . .

I’ve found myself filming videos in portrait mode more and more.

Yup!

And thats what amuses me when people obsess about matching grain that you’ll never see after the compression smooths it out!

Apart from on codecs that remove the grain, do the compression then resynthesize the grain….

I agree though, way too much time is spent obsessing about grain, especially when we’re talking about footage shot on digital cameras where it is noise, not grain, in the first place

Don’t forget that the younger generation generally watches most things on laptops, iPads, and phones, not TVs. Maybe lower resolution, but bit depth and color is better, so is signal path to the display.

Also think that the answer is different by content segment. If you’re making TVCs or online ads which will be obsolete in 12 months, you don’t worry too much. Anything that lhas longer life in it, it’s not unreasonable to finish with an eye to the near future.

At my house we have 1G fiber FiOS, but Optimum has re-built their network recently and is making aggressive sales efforts to get me to switch to 8G symmetric fiber. The compression for streamers may change in the not too distant future.

At 8G fiber having multiple UHD HDR shows streaming in the house should be no issue as long as their backbone can keep up with it. I think streamers may have to rethink their network topology though to make this more sustainable.
