Lol… very nice and maybe the best highjack of a node I’ve seen in a long time.

Love this. And maybe I’ll use this topic as a jumping off point for a matchbox shader that I kindly asked ChatGPT to help me with about 9 months ago and couldn’t push over the line. If someone else wants to take some of this ground work and see if they can move it along, that would be pretty cool because I am itching to get something like what Austin showed out of the Match Grain node and into something that’s less of a hack and more of a real thing.

I love Austin’s idea, and it stems from a Nuke gizmo a coworker showed us that basically does exactly what Austin showed off. I was trying to do it via Matchbox, and got pretty close but it’s not quite there; something is off and it’s hard for me to articulate exactly what it is.

To use the zipped up matchbox below, attach the 1st input to whatever you want your “back” to be, which is basically just setting the resolution. Attach the 2nd input to the isolated region of what you would like to tile–I like to use a Resize/Crop node set to Crop and use the Green bounding box to set the region.
