Hi all. I’m in a prep for a few shots in which I’ll have to add a background behind a charcater.
The main character will be shot inside a White box (ceiling, floor, side walls will be white and slightly reflective) and I’ll have to put an image as if it was a Led screen at the back wall. Client doesn’t have budget to put a real LED screen unfortunately.
My question is then should we shoot with the back wall white as well so I can add the BG plate with just blending mode and some roto or should I go with something less bright to retain more details when shooting?
The characters will include at least 1 dancer so possibly fast movements with motion blur etc.
At first I thought white was definitely the way to go but now, I’m not so sure.
Anyone?
You might get a slew of different answers here since it does to some degree come down to personal preference… that being said, unless the characters are going on a white (or mostly white) bg, I would steer away from a white background. The edge details will be substantially polluted by the white and depending on the exposure, you may be ‘missing’ some detail. I would use a green or blue screen here.
Tjr. That is my concern. Loosing small details or having the motion blurs crushed by the light BG…
The “slightly reflective” adds a fair amount of complication. Maybe you will get the best results by just multiplying the screen content over a white BG.
I’m apprehensive to recommend this because I get regularly burned by things being overexposed and there’s not any easy solutions for dealing with things that are too bight.
Nonetheless, if you do a test or two and they look good, go for it.
Otherwise I’d go with a bluescreen and cheat the “slight reflections” since you’ve got screen images going in as well, the reflections won’t need the physical accuracy they might if the set was meant to be a hall of mirrors.
Thank you Andy. That’s exactly my thought. It would be probably easier to just multiply (or other) on the neutral background but I don’t want to get for example a dancer “shrinked leg” because of a too bright white background… when the BG will be darker (and it’s almost sure it will be), we’re going to miss that leg…
I guess I’ll probably go with a chroma BG then
If this was my decision i’d go for a green screen shoot. Much safer of youve got a lot to do
