Blur in defocus mode is super slow

setting the blur node to defocus with a decent amount of blades makes the render super slow on a silicon Mac. if I use a sapphire version of the same things its quick. would much rather keep the batch with flame nodes not plugins though. is this a known thing. I mean really slow. like a 110 frame clip takes ten mins - with a gaussian blur it’s 30 seconds.

How about using Y_LensBlur as a matchbox, it will save with the setup too.

I’ve never had an issue with slow rendering using defocus on the blur node. Albeit I’ve not used 2026, so maybe it’s a bug.

There was a bug on Mac with Blur a while ago where certain magic number amounts of blur rendered much slower than others. Did that ever get fixed? Does it get any faster if you set it to slightly different blur amount?

ive just cut and pasted one of the defocus blur nodes from that batch into a new batch im using. new batch was taking ten seconds to render. now takes one minute! these are the blur settings/

I never adjust the sides, just change curvature to 1 to get a perfect circle, and of course, change the kernel.

If it’s getting slower over time, that feels like a memory leak. If it’s something you can repro, then it’s worth reporting to support. Say hi to the bot for me!

haha - not going anywhere near that bot. it doesnt get slower. just slow as soon as you add it.

the curvature thing is cool. got quicker. what do you with the kernel?

Personally y lensblur has replaced the ADSK tools for me. Real time and lots of settings to tweak.

I will check it out!

That’s how you control the bokeh, essential for matching the plate.

Adjust the blur value slightly and see if the speed increases. If you have two keyframes with inbetweens then it can slow it down regardless.

The lens blur matchbox others have suggested gives a better result anyway but thought I’d still suggest the above.

yep - know that - thought it had something to do with the speed of render too - although I guess it would

so your talking the y lens blur?

Y_LensBlur is my preferred option now too.

Yes. I think y_lens_blur is really good. If you have sapphire I sometimes prefer the s_rack_defocus to the matchbox .

The issue with the Flame Blur node set to defocus is on certain values it slows right down. I believe there is a post somewhere on here where the issue can be replicated by the support team.

I just checked it out. very nice. very quick too. I guess my original point is the basics in flame need to be the best they can be. it’s clearly not optimised for a Mac anyhow. id love to see a reverse match grain node too. a flame version of neat video. so its sort of linked - degrain at the beginning and regrain at the end - using the same nodes - the basics really
