The fact that there is lossless H265 12bit which would be a great mezzanine format would make it a great addition to be able to use in Flame for transporting log media.
@AdamArcher - did you submit it as an improvement request?
Sure did. Let me find it. It started off as Cineform but changed to H265 in the thread. @fredwarren @Slabrie should I start a H265 request instead?
@adam archer - added a plus to your request.
Wasn’t Cineform the GPU decodable CoDec?
Sure was and it has been open sourced too. Really fast to encode and not too heavy on the decode so more efficient than H265. Issue is that lots of other software supports H265 but not Cineform.
FYI - For those willing to potentially pay for the ability to access HEVC in Flame, I got the following response from Drastic about the current state of MediaReactor:
Thank you for your interest in Drastic Technologies.
Unfortunately our Autodesk plugins have not been updated to support Rocky, or the latest Flame 2025.
Our development resources are tied up at the moment, but I understand we have done most of the work, and just need to put a build together.
I can let you know once we have a release to test.
Request for HEVC/H265 has already been logged on Flame -Feedback.
Any updates on this Stephane?
Flame 2026?
Sadly not but we will keep you and the community updated when this technology is available in our products.
Sadly yes but it is even more complex than that. There is the cost of the technology too that needs to be factored in. These days, even if the format has a specification vendors need to implement or license technology from manufacturers, which adds up to the total cost of your product.
Then you need to adapt the tech you use to support flavors or slight derivative of the implemented technology in application A, B, C, etc.
Then the camera vendors come up with with formats based on specified technology with a twist and you then need to work with your favorite technology partners to adapt their tech and not break other implementation.
All this is a good part of my daily stuff I look at. Fun
And, on top of all this, there are new “open formats” that in some case have also links to patented technologies that often you need to reverse engineer to at the end discover that you cannot use that in a commercial product since there is a dude in his basement waiting to sue you to death since he acquired a patent pool at the auction!
NAB beer conversation stuff!
Totally! Hands waiting to get cash coming from the sky
