Separate timelines for socials here as well always, usually once the 1920x1080 generic master is done, unless editorial diffs on the socials (rare but have had those).
Curious, if you are being asked by the clients and are delivering socials at those 1440 res, or do you resize to standard socials res at delivery.
Have found TL resize to yield better quality results than the TL action, but resize is just a tad bit slower to match the scans repo to offline vs the action.
People watch resizes on their phones. I would rather have the flexibility I have with action (extended bicubics for minor background extensions for example) than keeping the quality pristine. Also I tend to prefer doing my own resizing rather than match to someone elses offline, although that is not always an option.
I got called out for soft type once. That’s all it took. Also, the client doesn’t review on their phones (at least most don’t) so I need it to look it’s best without nitpicking between resize and action.
The idea of “oh its only for digital” etc is quite outdated.
Almost every screen is retina/like-retina res these days, and the content is being watched by sharp young eyes/demographics. Youtube/YouTube 9x16 shorts are being watched on very large 4k living room and bedroom screens.
Digital/web is the new “broadcast quality/standard” these days.
I can’t think of a single job I’ve done in the last year where that would be possible solution. I almost always end up using parts of the frame at the top and bottom that are cut off in the 16x9. Also titles seldom work across all platforms.
I agree except to the point where I need to worry about the quality difference between resize and action. And I have to admit, I’m not really sure who watches what on which device. I use my phone for text, calls and taking an occasional snapshot.
We just had to do a filmout for a job, and I included extra open gate clips in my prep for 9x16 socials. They acted like I was insane. Yeah, I am, but I need more pix for the tiktoks.
Not camera native but I try and hit a minimum vertical of 1920.
That extra headroom is a god send for socials.
I love using action for repos. I like nothing better than a sneaky extended bicubic to frame out a boom mic or even stretch parts of the shot to help me frame up those vertical ratios.
I have 2 preset TL action effects with expressions that reference the size data in surface>lens. It calculates the proper scale for fitting either horizontal or vertical like the resize does, but it also has an axis above that for custom repos. Frequently I can use the numbers that come from an aaf (but not always) if the editor has done a custom move, and they maintain the same relationship to the raster when I drop those clips into timelines of different aspect ratios. In essence one axis acts as a resize and the other(s) as custom adjustments, all concatenated. They can be a bit finicky sometimes, so I tend not to share them.
Not sure if this is related to what you are asking and you probably already know that you can throw away the timeline resize when you have a bfx and have bfx reset to the timeline rez with this option:
Hey jag :), I mean more being able to work at the source res in a bfx in a say HD timeline then would like the option to add a back clip in a bfx above but reference the source res rather than the sequence res
