Hi,

Can someone remind me how the proxy system works on a new project creation.

If I create a new HD project and set the proxy to 1/4 does the system automatically generate a proxy of every file larger than HD in 1/4 res ??

I have a job coming up where I will be editing lots of 4k footage before grading and any vfx. If I soft import will the system still generate hard proxy files of 1/4 res of whatever gets imported (soft or hard)

I’m worried my framestore will fill up quickly as I plan to import over 5 hours of rushes

There are 4 Proxy Settings in the project creation:

  • Proxy Quality: Lanczos is selected by default because it offers the best quality when you down res an image.
  • Proxy Size: Self-explanatory. This is the size of the proxies in comparison to the Full Resolution.

Now, when you asked “If I create a new HD project and set the proxy to 1/4 does the system automatically generate a proxy of every file larger than HD in 1/4 res” the answer is No. You need to modify the two other settings:

  • Generate Proxies by Default: This must be enabled by default if you want frames of the defined proxy size to be written on your framestore. Otherwise the decimation of the Full Resolution frame will be done on-the-fly in the Player, but the Full Resolution frames will be needed on your framestore.
  • Condition: You need to set the minimum pixel width value of clips for which proxies will be generated by default. If you want it to be HD, then you should set the value to 1920.

Finally, keep in mind that even if you generate Proxies by default you won’t get the space you are looking for on your framestore unless you unlink the high resolution media of your clips or if you soft-import them. The latter is probably the best workflow for you since some Timeline FX (Open FX and Matchbox plugins for example) won’t work well without any Full Resolution media.

Hi Fred,

i’m trying to use Proxies to speed up interaction with the timeline and i cannot figure out why its not working…
I have been sent UHD footage and its causing lots of frozen frames on playback, so i have set my proxies to prores422 Proxy/EXR, Lanczos, Proxy 1/2 width >960.
then i selected everything on the timeline, and told the media option to generate proxies (which it spent ages doing). Now in the timeline I switched the button from Full Resolution to Proxy, yet nothing chnages in the viewer. It remains at the full resolution and it keeps freezing and stuttering.

Probably something else i need to set but i havent a clue what…and suggestions?
