Hi all,
The open-source DCP/IMF mastering plugin for Flame I mentioned earlier is nearly done. I went back and forth on whether to build it at all — it’s something I’ve thought about for years while selling mastering systems.
Why: Netflix, Disney and Deluxe deliveries are moving toward raw IMF/DCP that then get reprocessed in mastering systems (Clipster, Transkoder, Mist, Cortex). I thought Flame users could use a tool that fills that gap directly.
What it is: basic color grading plus pure mastering — IMF and DCP output. Photon and ClairMeta validation are the next step. The UI is very Lustre-like, which is simply personal taste — I’m a Lustre user. Under the hood there is no Autodesk or Colorfront code. Almost everything is built on open source (OCIO, OTIO, OpenEXR, asdcplib, OpenJPEG, FFmpeg); the color engine is my own, with ideas from Galois and Albert Lautman, which I studied. I’d like to write that research up separately.
What it isn’t, and won’t be: Dolby Vision (licensing), Windows, Linux. It’s Mac-only by design, developed on a Mac Pro 6,1. I’m not selling it. The code will be MIT on GitHub, and I’d like help from this community with the Apple Silicon build and with real-world testing — especially playback on cinema servers.
Screenshots tomorrow.
