The Past of Compositing

And found this. Not directly related to what we call compositing nowadays but it got me thinking about the correlation of AI to desktop publishing. Look at the typography these days and compare it to an old newspaper. It’s pretty poor now. But not many people care.

Amazing!!

etaoin shurdlu what a genius machine

I learned this kind of compositing at Camberwell Art College in South London.
We had monotype machines, a functioning linotype machine, lots of different kinds of presses.
My worst nightmare in my first year was pulling a sticky wooden tray out of a cabinet, tripping and watching all of the monotype scatter over the floor.
I was mortified, but my teacher, Ian Primarolo, just laughed and showed me how to sweep it all up, melt it all down, and recast the entire tray anew.
Printing is where I learned what the phrase ‘cut to the chase’ means and the etymology of the word ‘cliche’.
Simpler times…

Did you use upper case and lower case like it was meant to be?

Yes!!!
I did!
Funny…

I learned how to make paper, mix inks, set type, bind books, stitch leather, make plates, make screens…

And taught all of my teachers how to use Quark Express and PageMaker.

Then I learned photography and taught my teacher Lightwave and Photoshop.

Then I learned video production and taught my teacher QuickTime, Avid Media Composer and went back after I graduated and taught him Adobe Premiere and After Effects.

Then I fell into a hole and learned flame from Sean Broughton, Chris Roff, Jon Hollis, Tom Sparks and Mark Wildig - I never learned how to make ladders, so I’m still in that hole.

It’s funny - thinking about @johnt original post, it would be good to form a company called HOT METAL COMPOSITING…
