Which Camera would you choose? Panasonic GH5 good enough?

Thanks Randy.

Well the next one has been green lit but they are not using the same DoP. The new DoP has a selection of cameras to choose from. Which camera would you choose for 60 mins of talking head-to-toe and mid shot. I have only worked with the FS7 and that was just ok but I’m guessing the FX9 would be better.

Here is what the DoP has to offer:

The saga continues!!!

Any of those will probably be fine. the main variable is whether you’d need the sensor to be Super 35 or Full Frame. Full Frame will give you a wider angle of view than S35, it might get you the wide angle you need for full body shot.

What is your time worth? Thank goodness they’re saving a grand or two by not renting a proper camera. 60 minutes of chromakey content is an awful lot. Can they rent an Ultimatte or something and treat it like they’re doing the weather?

But since we like to go on wild tangents on this thread, I’ll just throw out that you could do ProRes Raw from the A7s iii to a Ninja V, bring those files into Scratch and develop them into ProRes 4444 and then bring those into Flame for keying. Easy Peasy!

I like the way you’re thinking

For the next project, I’d buy an old Arri Alexa HD off of eBay for sub 10K, then rent it fecking back to them for the shoot.

Lenses (and accurate focus) also have a huge effect on how much you can punch in. I can’t tell you how many times a client has come in having shot 4k or 6k expecting to punch in and the image is soft. Looks fine at HD but as soon as you look at it 1:1 you can see it. We have one client who loves to shoot on vintage lenses and yeah, they can add a lot of character to the imagery but they’ve also had to reshoot entire spots because of this choice.

I’m not familiar with the GH5 but the GH4 you had to send out to an external recorder to get 4:2:2 - 10bit. and adjust a bunch of setting in the menu to get it to perform with flat colors, vlog and the like.
