Interesting turn of events.
is this a good thing or bad thing?
bad imho.
Most of the time these types of acquisitions end up enshitifying everything further.
Unless FSI was about to run out of options and would have disappeared anyway (which I’m not sure there’s evidence of), it just means less options, less competition, people moving on. Yes, there are always big proclamations about everyone staying, and them operating independently - which lasts about 6-9 months, or whenever the retention clauses expire.
There is possibility that the extra size/cash/relationships gives FSI a bit more wiggle room than they may have had on their own - especially in the big HDR screens. But that’s TBD. That really is the only upside I can think off.
Technology wise Atomos gains more than FSI from this combination. And it does water down FSI’s standing somewhat. But Asus and to some extend Eizo have been chipping away at that. I think Sony is mostly done on that front. But Asus has brought out a decent set of monitors that are good enough in the mid-market that it ate some of FSI’s lunch. And the market in the big HDR monitors is just not very big to survive on its own.
on the other hand sony has sold their TV division to TCL. or something
what I wonder the most is what will happen to zungheng , as thats rhe company making the monitors right? that was a strategic relationship or something, did atomos only buy the flanders part ? is zungheng still going to make monitors?
