Burn with Deadline

Came across this and thought there might be some folks here interested:

Interesting… but we also use Backburner to render Nuke, Maya, and other things, all of which can also utilize the renders nodes and with GPU. Now yes, Backburner doesn’t have much fancy resource utilization, and we aren’t huge scale. ~20 render nodes and ~12 workstations, and all can participate in a render job. I get why Danny did that, but he also has much more financial/development resources than most other places. I really appreciate BackBurner’s simplicity and flexibility, even if it is missing some fancier features. With our in-house toolset, we’ve been able to expand it just enough, to make it kind of perfect for our use case.

immensely ironic, bearing in mind that some vendors are prevented from participating in projects if the flames have internet access.

Internet access isn’t involved in Danny’s solution, nor in our extension of Backburner capabilities.

@Alan - you’re not using deadline, right? I don’t think my comment included you.
But Deadline is now an internet connected service available from Amazon, no?

I can confirm that it works and is quite seamless and cool, and support for timeline rendering would be greatly appreciated in supporting future workflows.

In terms of resources I would be rude for not pointing out that it is the work of only Danny and one other extremely talented developer that I would love to name but probably can’t. It was not some giant endeavor. I’m pretty sure it went from idea to prototype in a couple of months while they both worked on plenty of other things. (And only after we talked our dev out of just writing their own render manager from scratch).

I remember a couple days of “okay go ahead and submit another job” slack conversations near the end and then it… just worked.

I’m pleasantly surprised to see mention of it out in the world and for the opportunity to be able to thank Danny and his cohorts publicly for such a huge improvement to our artists’ quality of life:

Thanks Danny!

Our deadline has no cloud connection , you dont have to use the cloud stuff, they just made it completely free , its fine. their USD support sucks tho.
