I agree. only run one monitor if you really have to. much better with two.
if without a client next to you, working from home, if your monitor is as good as a ref/broadcast monitor, why not use one?
you don’t get the benefit of clicking on a node and seeing the output at all times on the second monitor. 2 up as a view has never really worked for me.
saying that though - I will try it again, my main monitor is an Apple XDR - brilliant monitor - tons of space. ill give it a go today and let you know how it goes. its been a little while since I tried one monitor only
Hmm, works quite well for me. For it to be fluid though it’s good to make use of contexts. Do a 2-up or 3-up, and then set the last node as ‘Context 2’, and then do bind the extra viewer to that context. Super fast to switch since all the context are ‘Space + number’. If you have a 3-up (given enough space), you can do the 2nd viewer for back of current node (F4), and 3rd viewer for final output (Context 2).
Different people have different convention for which context to use where, I like Context-1 for source media and Context-2 for final picture, and then might have others for key nodes.
I alternate my 2nd viewer between schematic and F4. That way you can have batch and Action/Image schematic next to each other. And then bind the different layouts in the layout manager to some F keys, so it’s easy to switch.
On my Mac keyboard I have F16 as single viewer, F17 as 3-up with schematic and context, and then F18 and F19 as 2-up combos of the different combinations.
actually been trying it and its fine for batch and things. but I miss when you are in the library or on the desktop being able to see the clip you click on. there’s no two up on the desktop!
I totally understand, but I think its just habits, and what your used to, I recently went from 100% keyboard and large Wacom to 80% (no number pad) keyboard and medium Wacom, I thought it was going to be difficult, but after a month or 2 its my new norm, … if you get the same result with one monitor ie, same level of QC, then it should eventually become the new norm. For me it’s more about which monitor, and minimal foot print, and weight. I’ll wait until NAB see if there’s anything new.
This NAB, Asus upgraded to QD OLED! ,… 8K!!!
that looks great - shall I cancel by Flanders one?!!
flanders is worth it, still , of course when you just want utter bang/buck then probably go woth the asus although we dont know price yet and asus has a great history of announcing monitors and never releasing them
you want to have gaia autocal and proper support? Go with flanders.
You want to have something thats nice and cheap? asus
Did anybody get a chance to check out the ASUS ProArt PA32UCDM 4k QD OLED at NAB?
Wonder what the price is going to be ?
$1599 will be available Q4.
Thats what the rep told us abd they had a little note on the back of the monitor.
Thats amazing, thanks!
What did you think of the monitor @finnjaeger?
hard to really judge on the show floor to be honest.
i think asus is the best choices for cheaper reference monitors in general as they support rec709 presets and luts etc.
Wow that seems cheap, I’m sure I’m missing something.
So this would be an alternative reference/broadcast monitor, competing against the Flanders?
There’s bound to be a catch but even comparing it to the Asus PA32DC which is 400 nits at $3,199.00 USD at B&H, the PA32UCDM appears to be great value and 1000 nits.
We looked at another ASUS and found that they couldn’t hold a calibration per input. So if you wanted to have different calibrations for different inputs you needed to use an external LUT box.
Hopefully that’s not the case with this new OLED from ASUS.
its the same panel as the flanders XMP310 this panel is apparently ridicolously cheap for whatever reason, probably because its some leftover piece of the motherglass from the other QD oled consumer TVs that samsung makes.
There are a lot of other manufacturers that are using this panel, anything that has a 32" QD oled is this panel, ive seen gaming monitors with 3 year burn in warranty for like $800 its kinda crazy.
the company that made the “older” 32" and 27" RGB oled where made from a now bust- company called Joled.
its to be seen how good the software is, I suspect a eizo model of this as a cg319x replacement is comming in Q4.
Very interesting, thanks Finn.
