Confusing (to me) delivery spec

Hello… I’ve been recently been given some delivery specs for a streamer and all is quite straight forward apart from the requirements for the bars. They are asking for…

“4:4:4 sources bars should be at 100%”.

It might just be the way they haven written it or I may be underthinking things but has anyone come across this before?

I’m assuming they are referring to colour bars on your slate frame, ie 100% saturation.

100% I have seen interpreted a couple of different ways. One means 100% saturation instead of 75%. This was why is always used to mean when you saw this.

However

I have seen more that one specification where they mean full height colour bars. essentially EBU colour bars with no letterboxing or other patterns at the bottom (I.e. no pluge or colour balanced rows) such as you get with SMPTE colour bars.

The 4:4:4 part I am assuming they are saying don’t use a 4:2:2 colour bar pattern but I would have assumed they would measure the same even with the horizontal chroma spread across 2 pixels. I am guessing the deliverable is 4:4:4?

When it comes to specifications that aren’t clear, I always ask the question if I am unsure about it. Saves having to remake and redeliver something because someone at the end has a bad specification document where what they write is ambiguous and could mean separate things.

I have yet to encounter a non-confusing and non-contradictory spec sheet.

The delivery is indeed 4:4:4… I was thinking they mean EBU bars so that’s what I’m going to tentatively go with. Will be asking them to clarify. All specs have this one thing that makes no sense. I think they just throw them in to make sure we have read them.

Most likely, who sent you the specs has no idea what you are talking about.
