Networking Hell - Unifi Switch

I have a Unifi XG 6POE switch.

It worked at one point, but it does not work presently. To resolve this I hit the factory reset and now it’s LED is a steady white. According to the website this means it is “waiting to be adopted.”

I don’t know what the fuck this is about. The little 1gig switches I have don’t need that shit. You plug some ethernet in and they work, but this 10gig fucker wasn’t cheap so I’m game to install whatever it is that enables this “adoption”.

I download the latest UniFi Network Application and fire it up. It just opens a webpage in firefox. I log into the account I created back in the day and get into something akin to a router admin page, only they’re immediately trying to sell me a subscription to… something.

I don’t need that. This is a fucking switch and I didn’t buy a subscription back when it used to work.

but I don’t know what the fuck to do to “adopt” this thing so that it works as a goddamn switch. All the things on their website say you need to pay for a subscription. I’m not trying to do anything clever. I hate all this networking crap. It’s nearly 2am here presently. I am in hell. The manual for this thing is a joke, “these are the ethernet ports. ethernet goes in. kthxbye!”

All the lights on the fucking thing indicate it’s working: 1g ethernets are lit up green, 10gigs are lit up white, but it’s not, um, switching. If I plug the computer i’m typing on into it, the internet goes down, despite the switch also being plugged into the internet router. That didn’t happen in the past.

Do I have to buy a $29/month subscription (a “Cloud Key”) to get this shit to work now? What the hell am I missing? I feel like last time (2021) I got the web UI to see the thing and told it “you are just a dumb switch” and it worked just fine for years.

Also, there is no urgency here. I’m not in the middle of anything important. I got a bee in my bonnet to pay more attention to my wifi and that got me looking into why I couldn’t get my NAS to mount and it all appears to be tied to this switch. I don’t have any work tied to this, i’m just a dude who’d like his fucking SIX HUNDRED DOLLAR switch to do it’s fucking job.

Thanks for any help.

Also my PS5 broke yesterday.

This is what the web UI looks like:

Oh no!
It’s midnight plus here and I just caught this.
I’ll ping you when I wake up (probably in 4 hours or so).
Hold tight.
For perspective, there are other firms who charge by the port. They usually get our military/government contracts….

I can’t offer any help, but I approve the grumpiness of this thread.
Networking issues suck.

I never heard back from andy - probably had a midnight network rage and cut all the fiber in vermont…

The adoption stuff is to bring it into a managed Unifi network environment. I have a Unifi Dream Machine Pro running mine. I have a bunch of their kit and am happy to try to help, but am by no means a networking pro. I have no paid subscriptions with them.

I found this: https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/12594679474071-Standalone-Access-Points-without-UniFi

Their website has a “Unifi GPT” bot. Joy. I asked it “After factory resetting a Unifi XG 6POE, how do I make it work in unmanaged mode?”

and it said:

[quote]
Based on the provided context, UniFi devices, including the XG lineup, are designed to be managed through a UniFi Console or application. However, if you want to use the device in an unmanaged mode, you can follow these general steps:

Steps:

  1. Factory Reset the Device:
  • Hold the Reset button for 5-10 seconds (depending on the device) until the LED indicates the reset process has started. Ensure the device remains powered during this process.
  1. Connect the Device to Your Network:
  • Plug the UniFi XG device into your network using a compatible PoE switch or adapter to power it and provide network connectivity.
  1. Access the Device Locally:
  • After resetting, the device will broadcast a fallback IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.20) if it does not receive an IP address from a DHCP server.
  • Use the WiFiman Mobile App or a network discovery tool to confirm the device’s IP address.
  1. Configure the Device:
  • If the device is in standalone mode, you can configure it using the UniFi Mobile App (available for iOS and Android).
  • Note that in standalone mode, features will be limited, and the device must be configured individually.

Limitations in Unmanaged Mode:

  • The device will not support advanced features like seamless roaming, remote management, or integration with other UniFi devices.
  • Management is limited to the UniFi Mobile App, and you cannot use the UniFi web interface or cloud-based management.

If you need full functionality, it is recommended to adopt the device into a UniFi Console or application. If you encounter issues or need further assistance, please contact support here.

The issue is solved. Thank you to @hBomb42 for the post, and @philm for spending some time on the phone with me.

I can’t fully say what happened, other than I reset things a few more times and troubleshot a lot of different things and now it’s working. I didn’t use the adoption or literally anything at the end of the day.

And my PS5 is getting repaired by Sony.

we checked:

routers
connections
networks
cables
ports

the answer was a hard reset on the switch, a power cycle on one of the routers, and a short amount of time for the switch to rebuild its routing tables.
