OT…remote accessing ipad…options please

Greetings from retirementland!

I have a small technical question thats not Flame related, but this forum has the best, most knowledgeable techies i know, so i’m gonna just ask anyway…

I need recommendations for software that i can install on an elderly relatives ipad so i can help them remotely with the increasing number of issues that getting older seem to create.

I need something thats easy enough for it to be installed without tech knowledge (i’m 400miles away) on the client ipad.

I’m thinking something like teamviewer, but im not sure if theres a better option.

Thanks for your thoughts

Adam

Controlling an iPad may not be as straightforward. One thing you could try is screen sharing via Zoom. Zoom now includes remote control of the mouse. I’ve done it on desktops but not iPads.

Realistically getting the elderly relative a Macbook Air would simplify this a lot. Parsec works really well in this scenario, and once setup requires less babysitting by your remote relative.

And that maybe your way in to iPad. There are ways for a local Macbook to control the iPad via USB connection.

Thanks Jan…Definitely not getting her any more devices! Has more than me and has a mental block with anything tech.

Just been trying a screen share feature built in to ios. We’re close to getting it working but batteries died before we could finish. We’ll try again tomorrow.

FaceTime screen sharing. no setup. nothing to install.

Also. For the love of gawd. Apple Genius Bar and phone support is amazetown. There’s nothing I hate more than technical support for family members.

I’ll send my kids to the Apple Store in a fucking limo before I’ll do too much.

Or they can submit a ticket.

Do you run a local LLM for RandyAssistant so the kids can submit tickets?

Hi Randy…We tried that but something in the system kept auto denying our access. We can’t even walk her through adding new contacts to try allow access as shes too easily distracted.

Genius bar is out of the question. She’s 80 something yr old, who struggles to explain the problem with any clarity, constantly calls things by the wrong description ( eg…a text message is all of the following: a text, a message, email, google, a notification or more often “it says!”

we need to see what shes looking at to diagnose the issue, and its often not the device shes refering to …she’ll call it the ipad, the iphone, even the landline sometimes, usually whilst juggling all three so its almost impossible to know what she’s doing.

I think a long drive is on the cards real soon!

I feel you brother. My mom is on a similar boat. I try to help her with her tech problems but one of us quickly gets frustrated. Luckily for me, we have a very active (and sometime intrusive) construct in the Turkish society: family, friends, neighbours, etc.

Then either SharePlay is turned off, Screen Time has disabled it, or her iPad OS version is so old the feature doesnt even exist for her yet.

I’ve been there and done that for years and honestly, a situation like this is not worth fixing. All you will be doing is opening the door for scams, theft, and pain.

the other (most likely) reason, judging by something she said…her contacts list doesn’t have our appleid linked email addresses.

We did check and the ios is correct and matches ours. We’ll sort it next month when we go visit.
