I usually lock the audio track first to make sure nothing gets overwritten and drag and drop the source into the just created and empty version track.

Found this explanation of ganging clips together using the reels desktop view. Even though the instructions from the manual say to use 2 different reels it also works when the clips are in the same reel and you can gang more than 2 clips of multi layered timelines. The only movement of the clips is by using the shuttle mode (dragging the time bar at the base of one of the clips). ie you cant play realtime.

You can gang clips and sequences together on the Desktop so that when you jog one, they are all jogged. This is useful for multicam setups. When you play a clip that is part of a gang, the current frame of all other ganged clips is updated once playback has stopped.
