Unread topics

Maybe I am too stupid but why are some topics regarded as unread (with the blue badge) and others don’t? I usually read forums by displaying all unread topics. But in the case of this awesome community I would end up missing 90% the posts.
I checked the preferences but couldn’t find a setting to alter the behaviour. Do I miss anything?

Great question @JulianMartinz. Our forum breaks down unread posts into two categories…posts in topics that you have interacted with, and posts in topics that you have not. By default, the site sets the status of any topic that you have spent more than 4 minutes reading into Tracking mode. Also, any topic that you have interacted with; created, liked or replied, is set to Tracking. It’s harder to diagnose without watching you interact with the site, but I suspect these are the differences in what you are seeing. So, in your case, in the provided screenshots, I believe that the bold / unread messages without any numbers of them are in fact, unread messages, and are within topics that you’ve either not opened or spent less than 4 minutes reading and have not liked and have not replied or have not created.

Regarding your unread replies having grey badges vs blue badges. I believe the blue badges are unread replies within topics that you have either created, interacted with, replied in, or spent more than 4 minutes reading, and the grey badges are unread replies within topics that you have either created, interacted with, replied in, or spent more than 4 minutes reading but are no longer considered new.

To summarize, in your theme…
If an unread topic is bold, it is unread by you and you have yet to interact with it.
If an unread topic is bold with a blue number, then it is unread by you and you HAVE interacted with it.
If an unread topic is bold with a grey number, then it is unread by you and you HAVE interacted with it but it’s more than 2 days old.

I hope this is helpful and clears up any confusion. The site is incredibly powerful in breaking things down to help but does have a lot of nuanced user interface clues.

Thanks randy. This explains at least the different unread types. I’d still like to have an option to display all unread topics. Regardless if I track them or not. But that’s not possible, is it?
I found the “Automatically track topics I enter” setting in the notification preferences and changed it from the default 4 minutes to immediately. So thats a start … but that won’t help for older unread topics or when not reading the forum for some days.

Cheers,
Julian

addendum: setting the notification-setting to immediately seems to do exactly what I wanted to. All topics are tracked now. Even those that I didn’t enter yet.

Edit: haha … or not. Just seems I spend most of the time less than 4 minutes on topics. Thought it were all unreads but it were only those I entered (so does exactly what it states to do)

Then set all of them to Tracking or Watching, depending on what you are after. Vist this link in your profile:

…and add all the categories such that you will in fact be notified of absolutely everything.
