Using HP StorageWorks X3800SB Server for Autodesk Flame Storage – Viable Option?

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently acquired an HP StorageWorks X3800SB Server, and I’m considering using it as a dedicated storage solution for my Autodesk Flame projects. Before I dive in, I wanted to get some input from the community on whether this server is a viable option for handling high-resolution VFX and post-production work.

Specifically, I’d like to know:

  • Has anyone used the StorageWorks X3800SB for similar tasks? If so, how has the performance been in terms of read/write speeds, especially with 4K/8K footage?
  • Are there any particular configurations or upgrades you would recommend to optimize this server for Flame? (e.g., RAID setup, network configuration, etc.)
  • Should I consider any potential bottlenecks or limitations with this server in a VFX environment?

I’m open to any advice or insights from those who have experience with this server or similar storage solutions in a Flame workflow.

@jackhicks121 - Sell it.
Buy something with low power draw and high bandwidth.
For macOS look at some external PCIe device with some NVMe.
For Linux buy a PCIe card with some NVMe storage.
Or
spend too much time, effort, power and money to drag it into the future.
