I’ve been using Digital Pigeon for years as pretty much my only file sharing service and I have been very happy with it. However recently I’ve been dissatisfied with it’s download speeds (I’m getting less than 800mbps on a 5-gig fiber internet service – upload speeds are decent at around 3500). The DP team are looking into it but haven’t had success in figuring it out.
Can anyone recommend a solid alternative, with solid speeds? I’ve never been a fan of Frame IO, and things like DropBox are a dinosaur-speed joke.
I’m still hoping the DP guys sort it out, but I’m having to look for better options in advance. Appreciate any insight or tips on this.
**I should note that at one point I was getting a little over 1000 download speeds with DP.
Thanks, Chris. I notice that MASV advertises up and down speeds of around 800 mbps. I’m looking for a service that supports closer to my 5-gig. I’ve reached out to MASV to see if they have any plans to do so.
@GPM - it might be a broader question now.
With whom are you sharing files?
Can you colocate and get closer to the network?
Can you use an internet storage service?
Hey Phil. I’m sharing files with artists on multiple continents, and with clients mostly in LA. I don’t think storage service would be right, as it’s not as client-friendly, etc.
@GPM - trans global workflow is solved and geographic replication is a background operation.
global clients can be granted access on a per projekt basis.
it’s less complicated than it once was.
I actually think Digital Pigeon is one of the better ones to be honest.
You could take a look at Hightail. I found it to be ok a few years ago when I used it, but I know they have made a lot of improvements since.
If you can on-charge your client, Aspera cloud is probably the fastest way to go, but at a cost. It is a pay per use model though so don’t need to sign up to anything. It is more expensive than Digi Pigi or Hightail but if you have large amounts of data that you need to deliver in a rush.
It has been mentioned elsewhere but I have been really impressed with MASV.
We looked at VAST and the write speeds were an issue. Frigging amazing technology. It doesn’t come cheap either and I have heard of a few cases where the initial purchase is heavily discounted to get you into their ecosystem but the next purchase is at list price when you want to expand. Others may have different experiences though so hopefully that has changed.
I guess that the short term sticker shock will potentially be offset once you begin to create long term value in the form of storage analysis, and better situational awareness for future use.
Otherwise, as you said artists and clients … i mean artists most people like lucid but its not client friendly → however Suite studios is both, artists can download the client and you work on the same global namespace like lucid but you can send over transfer and upload links .
A note on Suite also worth mentioning. The local performance isn’t capped like Lucid. The read and writes are indeed faster when we were testing before summer break.
Its just missing some maturity with more options like global mountpoints and the abillity to not hammer my router until my router literally crashes, its so fast, its too fast
