FYI, snippet from MASV’s reply to my inquiry. I’ll be testing it today.
“If you have the pipe for it we are actually 10Gbps Optimized. Although not widely available, we can go as high as 40Gbps as well. Our web app is already fast but you can also improve performance with our free Desktop app.”
Actually I meant the cache reads and writes. The syncing speeds are something else but the local r/w performance to the lucid FS doesn’t really blow anyone away compared to what the hardware can do.
It’s still not XFS r/w but it’s significantly better.
As an FYI follow-up here, I have tested MASV and the speeds are pretty good – about 2gbps up and down, give or take.
But for me the conspicuously missing feature is for a client to be able to preview clips through the link, without having to download. My clients are very used to just clicking on a link, seeing a nice branded space with thumbnails that they can click on for instant playback – then download if desired. Masv responded that they’ve had this request before, but it’s not in their current plans to implement.
So I’m definitely still in the hunt for something to replace Digital Pigeon…
I’ve never been a big fan of Frame IO, but it is the closest thing I’ve found so far… I’ve read mixed reviews about its speeds and consistency though. Any thoughts on that?
I’m Conner and I’m a Solutions Engineer here at MASV. If you have a 5Gbps line I would expect to see a bit more speed, please let me know if you’d like some help troubleshooting this.
We can hit 5Gbps using a browser. Chrome is recommended, I’ve had some good results with Brave and Opera as well. As you’ve noted in another post the desktop app does support 10Gbps, just needs to be enabled in the settings. I understand your specific need for thumbnails and previews in a file transfer solution. I can only echo what you’ve previously heard which is that it’s not in the pipeline to implement in the immediate future. Feature requests like these are always important and we always value feedback.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help!
I only upload with 1Gbps. Speeds seem to vary some, but I think that may actually be more Verizon than Frame.IO. They have the app where you queue uploads.
I haven’t had any problems per-se. The drawback, especially on large files, is that they process proxy files, so it can be a while after upload finishes before the files become visible to client. But that’s inherent to any platform that will have instant playback.
A few times I had tech-illiterate clients download a proxy file instead of the original.
And I haven’t compared pricing in terms of storage cost compared to the other platforms.
I think it’s an option if you need this higher touch user experience rather than just a basic transfer tool.
