The question is though would they? There’s a crisis brewing in software dev at the moment. If someone can roll out a Remote Desktop replacement in under a week by their lonesome with minimal coding experience why would anyone pay? The game has fundamentally shifted in that space as it has in ours… even if half the issue is perception.

This. I also think communities like ours, niche and with pubic-hair-thin margins need every advantage we can get.
It’s less about bureaucracy and more about supporting edge cases and legal insurance.
Also, if open source is so easy why don’t more people do it?

Or he could sell it to hp, then he wouldn’t have to support it, and by the looks of their past behavior neither would they.
It’s a strange world indeed.
It’s more complex though. The value is no longer with those who build the code, but those who can deal with the operations and support issues that are part of any solution.
It’s grand for self-service solutions, and even open source contributions where is less of an issue. It’s also easier if the solution is four-walled in your setup and doesn’t require others to interface.
But it puts places like HP in a tough situation. It’s not the individuals that will eat their breakfast, it’s the startups that can now build replacements much faster and on smaller budgets and peel off customers, yet provide ops and support that people need.
This is where HP is short sighted. Getting a good engineering team to refactor the HP Anyware code base to make it worthwhile keeping, whatever ailed it, can now be done for so much less, that it’s stupid to scrap it. Managing the EOL process is more expensive than having an engineer fix what was wrong with it.
And those are learnings that will translate to our space as well.
While it may be tempting to just push it to GitHub without some solid plan on making this a supported open source project is a good plan. It will just create more noise and more dust.
We’re all still figuring out how to operate in this environment.
And the HP’s of the world need new playbooks ASAP if they want to survive.
Ops challenge: Look at what Mythos can do: find and exploit zero-days in any OS, any browser in minutes. The bar on security has just gone up by an order of magnitude. Have a solution is one thing, have a solution that can survive is a different game, outside of sandboxed utilities.
Not to diminish Randy’s accomplishment. It’s mind-blowing by all accounts.
