Office Hours Live with Randy McEntee

In this insightful sixth class of the Flame for Nuke Artists series, join Christoph Zapletal as he explores the first of Flame’s three hero nodes in Batch - Action, Gmask Tracer, and Image. Focusing primarily on Action, the class explores its role as the 3D compositing environment within Flame, drawing parallels and distinctions from similar nodes in Nuke.

Key aspects covered in this session include:

  • Introducing Action’s multi-faceted nature, encompassing geometry, lights, cameras, projectors, and more.
  • A walkthrough of the Batch schematic in Flame, emphasizing the distinction between image processing nodes and the Action schematic.
  • Demonstrating how to add multiple inputs and layers within Action, including tips on managing different resolutions and color spaces.
  • A detailed look at the media list in Action, unraveling its role in media management and various functionalities like locking frames, applying blurs, color correction, and cropping.
  • Insights into keyframe management within the media list and the complexities involved.
  • Encouraging viewers to experiment with simple setups in Action to gain familiarity with its controls and functionalities.

Christoph’s class is designed to ease the transition for Nuke artists adapting to Flame, offering practical demonstrations and encouraging hands-on practice. This class sets the stage for further exploration into the Gmask Tracer and Image nodes in upcoming sessions.

Flame for Nuke Artists Class 07 shifts focus from the media list to exploring the intricate functionalities of surfaces and axes within Flame’s Action module. The tutorial begins with a demonstration of adding and manipulating multiple axes and surfaces, highlighting the unique behavior of these elements in Flame compared to Nuke. The class then dives into corner pin tracking, showing how to perform four-point tracking directly on surfaces. This approach contrasts with the previous class’s axis-based tracking, providing a more refined and accurate method for complex tracking scenarios. The session concludes with a preview of the next class topics, including utilizing Action’s outputs and adjusting UV points.

Absolutely loving the Flame 201 course. It has finally helped me wrap my head around Flame. Is there any update on a release date for Flame 201 Part 2?

The description says, ā€œSpring 2024.ā€

Thanks,

So glad you are enjoying Flame 201! Thanks so much for your patience as Flame 201 Part 2 is actively in production.

There is a lot of good/big stuff happening and sometimes there’s a ton of backend stuff that requires my attention.

My plan is to start rolling our Part 2 in the next 30-45 days. Ya know, Springtime in Chicago.

Aaaah, we call that time of year in Southern California ā€œFire Season.ā€ Thanks for the update, I’ll keep an eye out for part 2.

We call the LA season beachside ā€œJune gloom.ā€ Which lasts from May through September lol.

For those of you who were interested in attending the Masterclasses this year at NAB but weren’t able to attend, we do have replays available on Logik Academy Pro. These are part of the annual and monthly subscription plans, as well as for rent by the day or a one-time purchase.

Sitting in Logik Flame Suite for a few days listening to these amazing artists was a career highlight for me, and I learned something within 30 seconds of sitting in front of a Flame because someone saw me do something and asked if I knew of this even better way. I’m super proud of this collection of about 7 hours of content. Definitely check it out. And even better, mark your calendars ahead of time to join us in person at NAB 2025.
