Upgrade Flame and macOS (no project archive available)

Hello,

was an fxphd-student using the fxphd VPN-license before it has been deactivated. In order to be able to complete my little timeline based student project (a YT-clip), I intend to to subscribe Flame for one month (rather than using flex tokens).

Before the VPN-license was cut, I was working with Flame 2021.2. Since it’s unlikely that 2021.1 will continue to work after buying a Flame license, I have to update first macOS Catalina to macOS Sonoma (14) or Sequoia (15).

Unfortuantely I didn’t make an Archive of the project before the VPN-license was inactivated. In addition there is NO TimeMachine backup available.

It’s clear to me that wiping the SSD of the iMac 2019(?) 27" Retina 5k / i7 / 64GB RAM and make a clean-install to a actual macOS would be smarter, but definitely more time consuming.

Questions:

Are there reasons no to update Catalina to a new macOS but to make a clean install of the macOS when it comes to point the new Flame-version to the external
Flamestore in order to “restore” the project?

Other things to consider?

.
Thank you very much in advance for every feedback!

.

PS

  • I do know that the only officially supported backup workflow is archiving a project (within Flame)
  • a backup of /opt/Autodesk is available

You can use the command line tools to archive with out a license so you’re good there. I can’t comment on the MacOS version, sorry.

Wow that sounds interesting. Thanks for mentioning this possibility kyleobley!

‘flame_archive -l’

does list all projects

Do you know if a project created from the cli does include a backup of the Flame desktop too (with all the Reels) ?

Yes, it’s just like an archive you create within Flame itself. Just check all the options using --help.
