Hi, Have you seen the Apple logo morph on their events page?
I would love to create something like this for a job thats coming up next month. There wont be a budget for more than a day or two but something like that would be cool.
Any pointers? My toolset is only Flame with Borris FX
@johnag - sorry brother but that’s an extraordinarily big ask. @lewis and @Sinan and @alperoktay might be some of your finest resources for this level of optical sophistication.
if you want someone with deep flame/houdini chops(excuse the pun) then you should try to tap @imag4media
One or two days does seem overly optimistic. I’m sure Apple had more
Take a look at the recent thread on neon letters. If you deconstruct that into animated tubes and exclude the tubes from camera visibility but let them drive the glow you might have a starting point. But will need a lot refinement from there.
It may be possible with Flame, but it seems other apps will make that a lot easier especially on tight budget and schedule.
CG apps with motion graphics capabilities are more suited here. Possibly some advanced particles, but not totally clear path there. Glows are more controlled.
@allklier - one of the many wonderful things about lightwave is how you could modify any value by gradients:
imagine if you were filming cars in the real world and could mitigate reflectivity based on incidence angle (actually, that might eliminate some cosmetic work for flame so maybe not that great) but you could do this kind of thing in lightwave because - it did not pretend to be reality - it was the pretend reality that you wanted to make.
so, for example, you could build a volume (neon tube) and render the precise phenomena of the internals of the volume without the volume or the encapsulating media, getting in the way of the generated image.
I used to love lightwave - it was such a delicious mindfuck.
and sliders - like animating with a game engine.
anyway, this apple confection is almost certainly houdini.
and most likely an nnnnth level iteration of what was once a nice idea and became an abandoned graveyard of “who gives a fck, sign the cheque, and then I’m going to south America without a phone - fck you - never contact me again”
Hi John, I’d start by playing around with Radial Blur in the simple blur node. Adding a bit of blur and rotation (spin or twist) and tweaking the center point of the blur (the red dot) will help get you started. You could also throw in some chromatic aberration, distortion, or defocus nodes to make it more interesting.
Im sure someone here has a connection to the people who made it, but on the surface this animation looks like a combo of changing the mapping to polar coordinates… its like a mapping animation… pulling the Uv Wrap of a surface around a sphere… im sure theres mor to it to make it fluid and elegant but it looks like a mapping distort to me…
I remember someone had posted an xray shader kind of hack for action. Using a combination of a lot of the above, possibly geometry of whatever mark you’re trying to use for your client, maybe some displacement and some matchbox and/or sapphire blurs and glows might get you in the ballpark.
When i saw that i instantly said “oh its like the Saturday Night Live” open from like 4 years ago. Its one of the sapphire or boris filters… maybe related to convolve.
